The unpacking of the pataka model has been very valuable to understand the Manaiakalani kaupapa. This week Dorothy unpacked the floor foundations and zoomed in on Visible Learning. The bit that hit home to me was that visibility means it's not just the learning that needs to be visible to the learner but to everyone. Learning must be visible to the learner, visible to the whānau, visible to the teacher and visible to colleagues. Looking at learning from a 360-degree lens is essential, meaning that none of the learning journey is hidden in any way from anyone. Even the people viewing from the back, which can often be parents and/or whānau.
Teachers' intentions/ideas in their head no longer should be anticipated by learners to be successful. Visible learning starts with teacher planning, lesson delivery, student engagement, learning activities and resources, assessment and real-life application. All of this needs to be visual and accessible to everyone at all times. Digital tools allow us to do this with ease and opens doors to share the learning journey.
These concepts have opened up my thinking in a way that makes me reflect on what we are doing as a school and has me asking myself how visual is the learning here and how can we do this better.
Later in the day, I answered my own question after our Deep Dive on Multimodal learning. The 4 priority principles of Engagement, Personal Learning, Acceleration and Empowerment got me thinking deeply about how we can ensure everyone has access to quality learning and that this is visible 360 degrees of the way.
The exploring of the Multimodal multi-text database was very useful and I feel this is something we could build further on as a school to ensure that resources are shared and accessible for all teachers.
Spending time working with Sites was helpful and allowed me to try a few things that I had been wanting to work out. I realise that our school website is going to need some further work to ensure it is more attractive so that project will need to continue with the use of some of these newer skills. I also learned how to use the favicon button.
A really enjoyable day where I had a chance to learn and reflect on what I do and what we can do better as a school.
Kia ora Perrie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your reflection - visible teaching and learning are such an important part of our pedagogy and kaupapa. It's great to read that you are reflecting on how this looks in your kura. So glad you enjoyed the day.
